Which to choose

Choose Alpine for

  • Command list on every screen and built-in help for each option
  • Official native Windows builds alongside Unix packages
  • Built-in XOAUTH2 for Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo, and built-in S/MIME

Watch out for

  • PGP needs external display and sending filters
  • No Maildir, notmuch or JMAP support
  • Last stable release is 2.26; newer work is in alpha builds

Install Alpine

Choose S-nail for

  • Drop-in POSIX mailx, so it works in existing shell scripts and cron jobs.
  • Built-in SMTP, POP3 and IMAP with TLS; no separate sync or send tool needed.
  • S/MIME signing and encryption are built in.

Watch out for

  • Line-oriented prompt instead of a full-screen interface.
  • No built-in OpenPGP; upstream documents a gpg pipe workaround only.
  • IMAP support is kept at an older code level and upstream advises care.
