Which to choose

Choose Cone for

  • Handles IMAP, POP3, local mbox and Maildir folders, and newsgroups in one folder tree.
  • Built-in OpenPGP signing and encryption with per-account keys.
  • Optional master password encrypts saved server passwords.

Watch out for

  • Not packaged by Debian, Fedora, Arch or Homebrew; usually built from source.
  • No offline mode for IMAP accounts and no OAuth2.
  • No S/MIME support.

Install Cone

Choose S-nail for

  • Drop-in POSIX mailx, so it works in existing shell scripts and cron jobs.
  • Built-in SMTP, POP3 and IMAP with TLS; no separate sync or send tool needed.
  • S/MIME signing and encryption are built in.

Watch out for

  • Line-oriented prompt instead of a full-screen interface.
  • No built-in OpenPGP; upstream documents a gpg pipe workaround only.
  • IMAP support is kept at an older code level and upstream advises care.
